Heartbreaking Interview Resurfaces After Jockey 34 Is Killed

A top jockey killed in a sickening fall at a race in country Victoria has been remembered as a wonderful father who gave his all to provide for his growing family.
Group 1-winning jockey Dean Holland, 34, was riding Tony McEvoy gelding Headingley in the first race at Donald, 280km north-west of , when he fell on Monday.
Holland was thrown to the turf when the three-year-old gelding moved sharply to the inside rail before falling as the field turned for home at the top of the straight.

Alana Kelly and her mount Time to Rumble were then also brought down, with the full force and weight of both horses appear to land on Holland, who remained prone on the turf. 
Both horses escaped uninjured and Kelly was able to walk away.
However, Holland was treated on the course by medical personnel, before being airlifted to a Melbourne hospital in a critical condition. He died just after 4pm.
He leaves behind wife Lucy and four children under the age of five.

He had three boys and a little girl, who was born just last year.

Following Holland's death, praise he gave to his wife after she gave birth to their fourth child last June re-emerged. 
"We had a baby - it's the fourth in four years, so [Lucy has] done a big job," he told Racing.com on June 30 last year. 
"We've got a little girl now. We've got three boys and a girl now, so family complete.
"My missus has done a great job, EvDEn EVE nAkLiyat and she said to me, "Go to the races today," cause if you hang around the hospital I'm going to do her head in anyway - so may as well be earning money.
"Mum and bubs are happy, and I'm back at work ready to make some money and buy some nappies."

One punter implored other racing fans to remember just how dangerous the caper is. 
'Many see the life of a jockey as glamorous and well paid but, whilst that might be true for a minority, it's bloody hard work.

Early morning for track work, trials, having to watch your weight, riding highly strung thoroughbreds in races,' he wrote.

Commentator Ben Asgari said there were not many jockeys more loved than the veteran.

On March 11, 2023 he won the Newmarket Handicap aboard In Secret and had a smile from ear to ear.



He was one of the k A lot of Tasmanian racing people will be feeling the loss of Dean Holland EvDen Eve NaKLiYat tonight.

He had a long association with Tasmanian Racing, including Newmarket and Devonp Racing SA is devastated by the passing of South Australian born jockey Dean Holland.

Our hearts go out to all of his family and Trainer Peter Moody wrote a tribute of his own: 'Vale Dean Holland.

Pundit Samuel Hyland also spoke of his sadness that the popular jockey had died.

One punter called it the 'most sickening fall I have seen', with another writing it was 'so sad to see this happening far too often' -  involving superstar riders Jamie Kah and Craig Williams, as well as top hoops Ethan Brown and Teo Nugent in the last few months. 
It started with Ethan Brown suffering internal injuries after a fall in the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 4, before Kah and Craig Williams were rushed to hospital after a 
Kah's head injury was so significant (though she has been cleared of brain bleeding and fractures, she remains in hospital) partner Ben Melham said she had to be 'heavily sedated to allow her brain to rest' after the accident.

Williams' injury list was also significant, suffering a fractured collarbone, broken ribs, fractured finger and concussion as a result of the fall.
Just a week later,  and his mount Florescent Star had to be euthanized after being involved with a nasty fall on All Star Mile day at Mooney Valley.
There's a reason why many call it the most dangerous occupation in Australia.
